Physis - Natural products
Caress of nature that awakens the senses
The Kalymnoi have long been famous for their love of the sea, as proven by tombstones found in Cyprus and Sicily. The occupation of the islanders with the cruel and dangerous profession of sponge-fishing has been lost for centuries. Swordsmen, trawlers and wind turbines, along with sponge-throwers, made a decisive contribution to the island's prosperity.
PHYSIS on the island of Kalymnos, is a family-run business whose knowledge of spongeing and sponge trading has passed on from generation to generation.
Faced with the crisis, we have chosen to focus on foreign markets and to increase our support in the domestic market.
The best sponges grow in depth from 10 to 25 rage. According to data from 1800 at the beginning of May, a group of 4-7 people set out on a 6-8 meter boat and some supplies (such as roasted sheep or goat meat, few legumes, rice, olives, cheese and walnut) fishing sponges with the sole provision of their breath strength. They dived to a depth of 30 meters to catch sponges spotted from the boat with a glass. Elderly archives indicate that in 1860 there were 300 boats and 72 kangaroos for sponges. The island returned in early September. Chaldean merchants bought the sponges and sold them, starting in Syria, Nafplio, Constantinople, to reach Odessa, Kiev, Petersburg, Moscow and later Trieste and the Middle East. The 1825 census reports 5,000 people in Kalymnos. In 1912 there were 23,000 settlers from the surrounding islands in search of a livelihood from sponge activity.
